Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum

Auschwitz-Birkenau, a German Nazi concentration and extermination camp (1940-1945), inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979, has a completely different feel than other sites. A symbol of planned genocide and the Shoah, it was established by the Germans in mid-1940 on the grounds of the military barracks in Oświęcim. It is a monument to the dark pages of history in a living city.
In occupied Poland, German Nazis created a place that became a symbol of genocide. In 1940,
At the request of Heinrich Himmler, a camp complex known as Auschwitz-Birkenau was built on the outskirts of Oświęcim.
